If you visit this salon - especially for bridal parties - get a price agreement in writing in advance if you're concerned about cost. And, again, if you're concerned about budget ask how much what they're doing will cost (though doing this in person and on a wedding day would not be an ideal experience). In retrospect I should have been more assertive about not needing to curl the already curly hair and about having the disappointing $65 style re-done. And, obviously I should have gotten things in writing.
In terms of services, my mom's short hair was curled and it cost $50. The other three with longer hair were charged $75, $65 and $80. The $80 style was an up-do. The $75 style involved curling (of naturally curly hair), 2 hair pins and minimal styling. The $65 style was the least impressive of the group and ended up being put up in the end, though it was not requested. The bridesmaid was not happy with her hair and we should have been more vocal at the time.
I wrote a letter to the salon requesting the difference between what I was quoted (assuming the max charge for each person) and what I was charged. Eventually they refunded slightly less than half of the refund I requested. The phone call leading up to the partial refund was not a pleasant one and I was told that I must have mixed up my notes because there was no way I could have been given the wrong price information. I was surprised she offered me any refund in the end because the tone of the conversation was hostile and defensive.
By way of background, it was important to me to stay within a reasonable budget for hair styling. I called several area salons and found a few that were reasonable. I picked Shine because they told me that their blow outs started at $35 and went up to $50. They said up-dos could be on the higher side but not more than $50. I was charged an average of $72 per person (almost $400 for 5 of us). None of us had our hair washed or cut - there was curling and some pinning.
Cons: They misrepresented their pricing scheme to me and charged me almost twice what I anticipated paying. I felt defrauded. I was extremely upset an hour before my wedding.
Pros: They did a good job on 3 out of 5 of the members of my bridal party. I was very happy with how my hair looked.
Had she just apologized for the confusion and offered a partial refund at the beginning of the conversation I would have felt much better about the whole ordeal. Instead, she reiterated that it was my mistake and I had difficulty finishing my sentences without her interrupting me.
When I went to pay, I was shocked by the bill, but since I was getting married in an hour I was not in a position to argue. I mentioned that I expected the bill to be substantially lower and the co-owner said something to the effect of 'there's no way anyone at our salon would have ever told you that.' I was extremely upset and left the salon furious, not only that I was overcharged but that my concerns were dismissed so flippantly. This was, in my view, a pretty straight forward bait-and-switch situation and I had no recourse since I couldn't exactly return the product.
